Nathan Russel’s Authentic Art

I really like the aesthetic that Nathan Russel uses. Especially the hand drawn typography, it really gives his work an authentic tone. He’s very prolific, delving into music, art, illustration, clothing, and posters! I admire creatives with this kind of broad surge of energy.

The Return of the Zeppelin!

It is already 2012. We were supposed to have jetpacks and easy space travel by now according to many sci-fi predictions. Bringing back this Zeppelin lookalike is a great first step! I always wondered why we aren’t using airships nowadays. The most used argument against them seems to be the Hindenburg incident in 1937, in which an airship caught fire, exploded, and killed 36 people. If this is the best argument against them, then surely after the titanic, which killed 1,500, we should’ve stop using ships…

Mousewheel powered exploration

Who ever thought that the mouse wheel would be the best way to explore the size of the universe? I’m constantly inspired by science and although this isn’t the prettiest of websites, I feel that it’s simply awe-inspiring. After visiting this website I’ve discovered some funny names for some nebulas (Tarantula nebula, Barnard’s Loop, & the Spire to name but a few).

The Topographic Type

Check out my Threadless T-shirt design submission here! This project has taken me quite some time to perfect. I came up with the very first concept sketch probably about a year and a half ago. I kept having getting stuck and having to put it aside to work on other things. Every time I came back to it however, I would just add that little bit of extra detail. And then finally I realized I was close to a draft version when, just a few weeks ago I realized I simply had to make the final push. So a quite few long days and longer nights later, voila! Here it is! The finished design, with an alliterative pun for a title: “The Topographic Type”

As is standard practice for Threadless, the design is currently “pending”. As soon as it comes out of that I’ll repost and remind everyone about this – I need your votes in order to get it to print!

Pat Perry Illustration

The work of Pat Perry simply blows my mind. His mastery of so many different styles of painting and illustration makes me wonder what I’ve been doing with my life!

Pixel Distortion

I’m a huge fan of analog techniques, so I really enjoy this clever bit of typography by Ruslan Khasanov. Created using water droplets on a screen, the type prismatically distorts the screen’s light displaying nice rainbow colours. Really cool!

Albatros Bookmarks

Some design finds a need and then fulfills it. Other design creates a need and then fills it. This new little product, called Albatross, replaces all those little bits of paper you’ve been using to as a  bookmark. Its a neat little idea, because it follows your pages as you read.

On the one hand I think this is a simple and minimal solution to a problem. On the other hand, I’m unsure how big of a problem the current bookmarking system really is…

Game of Thrones meets the Simpsons

Check out this recent Simpsons intro sequence. I personally haven’t been watching Simpsons in years and years, but its good to see they’ve still got it sometimes when in comes to in-your-face parody. I’m a huge fan of Game of Thrones, having read all the books, and so this intro sequence makes me all giddy inside.

Everything is a Remix

The “Everything this a Remix” series by Kirby Ferguson is now finished. The fourth and final episode deals with copyright and patent law. Its an  interesting series, and the final one is great, but sadly offers no real solutions to the problems it reveals. Hopefully copyright will become more of a tameable beast in the future, so that it assists innovation rather than hinders it.
